A technician who has earned NATE certification has passed both a CORE and SPECIALTY test and have proved they have a real world, working knowledge of HVAC systems. To become NATE certified, the technician must first choose a Service or Installation path. Once they have chosen their pathway, they must take a pass the CORE exam, which is a 50-question exam comprised of questions developed by subject matter experts, including contractors, technicians, distributors, educators, manufacturers, and utilities.
Once they have passed their CORE exam, they will choose from one of many specialty exams, each of which contains 100 questions. In addition, they must complete both exams within 2 years and cannot retake a test within a 30-day time period. Specialty tests include the following and more:
